We invite you to join us via Zoom for a livestream watch party and discussion of Nancy Kates and Bennett Singer’s celebrated documentary Brother Outsider: The Life of Freedom Fighter Bayard Rustin. Commemorating the work of one of the “unknown heroes” of the civil rights movements, this documentary explores how the achievements of Rustin—a leader in social movements for civil rights, socialism, nonviolence, and gay rights—were masked because of his sexual orientation.
Following the movie, History student Nikita Shepard will lead a Scholars on Scene discussion tying the film to their own work on LGBTQ communities, social movements, and radical politics in the United States.
The film is available to screen for free to Columbia students via Kanopy. To join the watch party and/or Scholar on Scene conversation, please register here by October 21.
